Celestial Marriage
is Polygamous by Nature

Rumors of "Spiritual Wifery" and "Polygamy" plagued the Mormon Church from its very beginning. Joseph Smith always strongly denied that such things were practiced in the Church. However, in 1843, about a year before his death, Smith brought forth an announcement from God—"The 131 and 132 Sections of the Doctrine and Covenants."

Joseph's natural wife, Emma, was incensed by the gossip and nearly left the Prophet. However with publication of the 132nd Section as a "Revelation from God," he was able to bring her into submission. Although she burned the revelation in the fireplace, she knew Joseph was going to circulate it among the leadership and she was powerless to fight him.

One of the things the Saints threw in the face of Smith was the teaching of the Bible that a godly man must be the husband of but one wife (I Timothy 3:12) and other Bible statements. In addition, the Book of Mormon itself declared that polygamy was an abomination before God.

22. But the word of God burdens me because of your grosser crimes. For behold, thus saith the Lord: This people begin to wax in iniquity; they understand not the scriptures, for they seek to excuse themselves in committing whoredoms, because of the things which were written concerning David, and Solomon his son.
23. But the word of God burdens me because of your grosser crimes. For behold, thus saith the Lord: This people begin to wax in iniquity; they understand not the scriptures, for they seek to excuse themselves in committing whoredoms, because of the things which were written concerning David, and Solomon his son.
24 Behold, David and Solomon truly had many wives and concubines, which thing was abominable before me, saith the Lord.

Smith countered with the two revelations in which God supposedly told him that polygamy was not only OK, it was required!
